Why Is Wet Food Good for Cats? 3 Science-Backed Benefits

FURDEAR JOURNAL / CAT NUTRITION / 3 MIN READ

A good meal is more than what's in the bowl. For cats, the water that comes with it matters, too.

Wet food is often recommended for cats, but what does the evidence actually say? Here are three thoughtful reasons to consider it—and what to look for when choosing your cat's next meal.

Better feeding starts with understanding what cats need.

01 / HYDRATION

More moisture, naturally.

Cats get water from both their bowl and their food. According to Cornell University's College of Veterinary Medicine , canned cat food contains at least 75% water, while dry food typically contains 6–10%. That makes wet food a useful way to add moisture to a cat's daily diet.

Everyday takeaway: Wet food can contribute to hydration, but cats still need fresh drinking water available at all times.

02 / URINARY WELLNESS

Why moisture matters beyond the bowl.

In a 2011 study published in the British Journal of Nutrition , six healthy adult cats ate diets with different moisture levels. Their average total daily water intake was higher on the 73.3%-moisture diet (144.7 mL) than on the 6.3%-moisture diet (103.4 mL), and their urine was more dilute.

That is a meaningful finding, but the study was small. It does not prove that wet food prevents urinary stones or kidney disease in every cat.

03 / MEALTIME APPEAL

A texture some cats simply prefer.

Every cat has their own preferences. Cornell notes that canned food is highly palatable for many cats, and its variety of textures can be helpful for picky eaters. It is not a guarantee that every cat will love it—but it gives cat parents more ways to find a meal their cat enjoys.

Choosing wet food? Start here.

Look for a "complete and balanced" nutritional adequacy statement appropriate for your cat's life stage. As AAFCO explains , that statement is more useful than judging a food by its marketing claims alone.

And remember freshness: the FDA recommends promptly refrigerating or discarding unused wet food, with refrigerators set to 40°F (4°C) or below.
